From planning permission to construction supervision for a 54-hectare farm

A new production site is being built for Hoogweg Paprikakwekerijen B.V. on Baarloseweg in Marknesse, comprising a total of approximately 54 hectares of glasshouses. The facility is being designed for the sustainable cultivation of peppers and will, amongst other things, utilise geothermal heat from its own geothermal source. The scale of the project entailed a complex process, in which planning permission, design, tendering and construction had to be carefully coordinated.

AAB supported Hoogweg Paprikakwekerijen throughout various phases of the project. The consultants handled the planning applications and provided support with the design, tendering and construction supervision. This involved the integration of various disciplines, including greenhouse design, technical installations, farm buildings and the layout of ancillary facilities.

Construction of phase 1 began in February 2024. This phase comprises three greenhouse blocks with a total of approximately 32 hectares of growing space, an operational building of over 13,500 m² and three ancillary buildings. In parallel with the construction, the underground infrastructure and technical facilities were also completed. Once the technical installations were commissioned, the greenhouses could be fitted out for cultivation, and the sorting line and internal transport systems were further developed.

Preparations for phase 2 have now also begun, comprising two additional greenhouse blocks covering approximately 20 hectares, ancillary buildings and a separate farm building. The project demonstrates that large-scale greenhouse horticulture developments require an integrated approach, in which planning permission, engineering, design and construction are closely interlinked from the outset.
